My name is Katelyn Kammer, and I'm an AP Photo III student at LRHS. I'm a bit of a tree-hugger and a Seattle native, but I've been away from home for 4 years. Freshman year, I switched out of theatre the first week of school to take art just so I could experience photography class the next year. That was the best decision I've ever made. Photography gives me a sense of home away from home. I don't know why, but whenever I pick up my camera and walk out into the unknown, I feel at home again. (I also take way too many photographs of trees and pinecones when I see them...)
Artist Statement
I love photography. I love the concept of being able to create something new out of something that already exists. My goals as a photographer is to create work that I am proud to show off to anyone, and work that I can enjoy looking at myself. I love being able to just walk out into an area where most people see nothing beautiful, and then being able to take photographs of the area and make something beautiful out of it.
This year, I've been asked several times by teachers to come and take photographs for them. The head of the theatre department, Ms. Blasko, asked me to take headshots for the Advanced Theatre Class' production of 12 Angry Jurors. I took two sets of them, as well as post-processed them and made them look the best they could. Ms. Duff, Marine Biology and Anatomy & Physiology teacher, asked me to take photographs of guest speakers and interactions during the STEM Fair Career Day. I was able to run about the rooms with speakers in them, taking photographs at my own free will. It was incredibly fun, and it allowed me to improve my event-photography skills. I even spoke to two of the guest speakers afterwards, who used to work for an event-photography company. They gave me the details of the company, and I've even been looking into working with them now! Every person I meet while doing what I love is another step towards where I want to be in my life.
Of my most recent works from this year, I am most proud of my Art from Art photographs. Last year, I really rushed my Art from Art and it didn't come out as good as it could have. This year, I really followed the guidelines and went about creating the best photographs that I could. I used creative problem solving to go about making my photographs look as much like Kathe Kollwitz' charcoal self portraits as I could. I'm very proud of the creativity, time, effort and work I put into this assignment. It was a lot of fun.
